*IMPORTANT* Techious Archives

Right what I want to talk to you guys about is the multi-hundred gigabyte blob of storage known as the Techious Archive. This archive, accumulated over a number of year consists of SourceTV replays and minecraft saves and TF2/CSS/etc. maps.
Last year I ran out of disk space, so I moved the majority of this onto mediafire, and now due to inactivity, this archive may be deleted. I hopefully have a bit of a work around (randomly downloading files), but the question I want to ask is what do you guys think should be done with the archive as really its everyones history in this.
What I think may be possible is either just randomly download and hope for the best, but it may be better to do something with this data. For SourceTV, we could possibly check which files still load, and try and render and autoupload to YouTube, or we do something else that makes use of the files. For the minecraft files, we have saves for the periodic snapshots we take, do we really need as deep snapshots that is taken or can we do with something a bit lower (daily or just one per map), possibly rendered.
On the just store front, there are a number of options but most of them cost money. Either we pay for online storage and then store this online, or we fund more storage in my home server for techious storage or we just hope for the best and randomly download files.
Any other ideas (or do I just destroy it), just say. Please reply, after all its our history I've been trying to maintain.

A Bunch of Changes... (and a bunch of text)

Comment on this news.
Firstly, hello (again). I hope you're enjoying this, I hope it isn't TLDR but I'm sure someone will make a TLDR version of this. <Insert link to TLDR version here>
Since Skillers stepped down two months ago, I've been looking at how to improve Techious around here so we can have more fun. Now some time has passed (2 months unsuprisingly) and I want to tell you the changes I'm making around here that hopefully you will like. I'll split it into sections, but I hope you get the general gist.
SERVERS
As you know, we sadly had to get rid of the main server, but we hope that our smaller setup will help us play more games together. If we only have a server or two (instead of a thousand empty ones), I hope we get a nice community feeling around games. Currently we have TF2, but if people want something else, and enough agree we'll switch to <insert game here>. Even though we have only one server, I hope some people will still contribute to Techious, funding helps us keep what we have alive, and through a new air of keeping everything public, if wanted, I will place down exactly what is spent where and when and why. It's our community and our communitys money and if you want it spent differently, then we spend it differently.
NEW RULES
We had rules once, and we need a few rules to keep things fair. Then again I don't like the word "rules", how about "guidelines"? Right, so heres a few guidelines to help the community flow nicely, and I'll just quote the person who mainly wrote them:
Lord Metritutus wrote:
THE RULES
The rules are simple. Mostly just use common sense in your conduct with us.
- Hacking/cheating on our servers is an instant permaban. eg wallhacks, aimbots, etc
- Do NOT bring your personal conflicts to our servers or community. No one wants to hear your arguments with someone else.
- If you feel you are raging, keep quiet, or if you feel unable to do so, leave. Uncontrolled rage will not be tolerated.
- Do not flame/insult/troll people, post anything offensive, warez, porn, etc
- Server exploits will generally be considered as rule breaking unless most of the people on the server are finding it fun. The same goes for 'admin abuse' - if 'admin abuse' is annoying or upsetting another player it is in violation of the rules. Report that admin to another member of our staff providing as many details as possible.
Unless otherwise stated, violation of any of these rules will result in a warning. Continued rule breaking will result in a 6 hour ban. Further rule breaking after this will result in a permanent ban. Bans are global across Mumble, the game servers and the forum (with the exclusion of the appeals section).
The 'record' of these violations for each individual is reset every week, so you won't get caught out if you break a rule two months after you got your 6 hour ban (you'll just get a warning).
If you do receive a permanent ban, you have ONE AND ONLY ONE appeal against it (post in the appeals section).
All users including Staff are not exempt from nor above the rules.
Any issues with the rules, just let us know with the feedback system (below)
NEW STAFF
To help with the new rules, we have a change of staff members to help keep things nice around here. I would like to welcome McWill and Kyhas to the moderation team. I have invited them to join us as staff as they seem be popular amongst members and will provide us all with a good time. Also so people know, Staff found breaking rules and basically using admin or their place to troll will find themselves as not staff, if you think this is happening leave feedback (below)
NEW "JOIN COMMUNITY" RULES
As you all know, previously to join Techious we've required you to sign up on the forums and spam for two weeks and then Skillers would say yay or nay. Now we are using a new system where all you have to be to join the clan is to be active generally in Techious stuff and be popular amongst the community. The Applications forum will be updated appropriately soon to reflect this.
NEW COMMUNITY FRIDAYS/SATURDAYS
Community Fridays are back, though most likely as Saturdays and in a way that peoples views actually matter. Instead of giving you a list of games and to pick, we'll ask you, what do YOU want. The game with the most support will win!
FEEDBACK
Finally, we have anonymous feedback system. Visit http://www.techious.com/feedback.php and leave feedback! We do not log your username so you can be assured that it is as anonymous as we could make it.
Sorry for the long post, but hopefully you'll enjoy it.
Thanks,
Si (and new staff)

Server Migration - Keeping You Up To Date
Posted by: Si on 2010-10-13T11:03:55+00:00
Comment on this news.
Well, after much planning and a lot of crossing fingers, we are finally at the stage when all the changes are going to happen. Throughout the next few days (between now and Sunday) services will be moved from our current server to the servers that will now host Techious content. This will happen in a few stages, wtih the aim of making it as seemless as possible (for 99% of things you won't even notice) but here is a rough timetable for events (no timings, just an idea on what will happen in what order)
New server set up
Web server (only) moved to new server, with DNS update. Both servers will serve from the same database at this point.
Create new TF2 Server, point old one as a referer to the new IP
Move MySQL server to new server, at which point the old server will not function
Move Mumble server.
New Minecraft Servers
Setting up of new STV/MC system
Other websites moving
Server hard drive erasing, ready for final shut down.
(This list will be tweaked soon to reflect what will happen and what changes may be made to schedule as we move)
The next post from me will contain a URL that will basically allow you to keep track of the changes, but as I am currently on a train at the moment, writing this page is not possible.
We thank you for putting up with things in this weird pre-move stage, and I hope that what we get will be better for all our commuity members.
Thanks,
Si (and Staff)

Server Offline Tonight

I've had a month to tell you and I completely forgot... our server will be going offline later tonight for about 4-8 hours. It's because our host is doing some stuff with the power. I'll turn off our server at about 11:30 pm and it'll be back sometime between 4am and 8am.
Sorry for the lack of forewarning... it completely slipped my mind.

New Forum Theme

Comment on this news.
If you go to "User Control Panel" -> "Board Prefernces" and set your board theme to "Techious New (Test 1)". We are testing a couple of new themes for the forum. One in white(ish) and one in black(ish).
The white one is currently up and I would like your thoughts for tweaks before finishing the black one off.
So yeah, turn it on, have a play and let me know how I can tweak it.
Thanks
Known issues:
- No link to VAT from anywhere else other than the main page. I will edit this in once the tests are over, but I see little point tweaking it just to get erased for the next test
- User name colours look wrong - I'll fix this once we go live with the new site.

A blog with multiple authors so to speak, about gaming and perhaps other things as well (technology and so on).
Thoughts?

Forum Rearrangement
Posted by: Skillers on 2010-07-17T12:48:48+00:00
Comment on this news.
We have greatly reduced the numbers of forums and subforums, which should hopefully concentrate and direct discussion more.
User forums are gone, with popular forums being moved to their own place and the others being merged into bigger forums where appropriate.
The clan section has been reduced dramatically. Clan Pub and ITCHY have been merged and the rest of the clan forums are now subforums of this.
Hardware and software have been merged to a generic tech forum.
We have created a creativity forum for post of art, photos, videos and other things you have created. We have gone through and moved a fair few other posts into this.
All sports and music type forums are now in "Other activities".
There is also a new "Serious" forum, which we hope will foster some good discussion.
Random sh*t is now the place for all your rubbish posts, and does not count to post count, neither does Forum games (notice how my count has gone down 10K).
If you're having trouble finding a thread, ask me and I'll help you locate it.
Enjoy!

Also, we're looking at other premium services, to make use of the spare power and raise more money to keep the servers alive, like renting gameservers off us, and if you have any ideas for these, that would also be great.
Thanks
