Hello, my name is Aaron and at the moment I hate Microsoft Windows. Over the next few days or weeks I am going to continue to add posts showing why I hate this operating system, and would appreciate it if you could post as much information as you can, whether you agree or disagree, or want to raise a new 'topic of hate'.

I will start when I get home.

Actually, I'll start now considering it's just f*cked up my overtime.

Windows screws with file permissions. NTFS permissions randomly go corrupt, and it's quite possible for users to do this themselves simply by being stupid. I have made sure that nobody is accessing the folder I am trying to copy because I turned all the machines off that use this share. I am copying from one physical disk to another, and the amount of data I am copying totals 6.2GB. The last thing you want when copying this amount of data is for the transfer to go wrong somewhere in the middle - because you know it's going to stop the whole thing, and the folder with the problem is going to be inside several other folders, encrypted in a zip, inside some other folders, in some other folders, etc...

Oh wait. What's this?

[img:322d6dd58b]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a324/azcn2503/badcopy.jpg[/img:322d6dd58b]

OK, great, thanks. Thanks a lot for stopping my transfer when I have 20 minutes (Windows' way of saying 40 minutes) left to go.

I would appreciate the option to, if there even was a problem, sort out whatever it is that dialog box is saying and then continue from where it stopped. Unfortunately, Windows, the most popular OS, for some reason, doesn't allow you to do this, even on Windows Server 2003 with the latest updates.

I haven't checked, but I might have accidentally pulled the server out of the rack, opened up the casing, and unplugged the hard disk drive I'm trying to copy to.

It could be that, due to Windows' far 'superior' memory management, it has managed to store the 6.2GB transfer in the paging file for whatever reason, resulting in the source hard disk drive to run out of space, since it only has 5GB free space (hence why I am doing the transfer in the first place).

Hell, it could be that the memory sticks fell out during transfer or something crazy, but whatever.. don't blame it on the operating system. The operating system is fine, and it gets the job done. I love Windows so much.

OK, I needed to make sure that everybody had logged out of the server before going ahead with the transfer to eliminate that factor from the copy. I restarted the server and started the copy process again.

This time, Windows runs in to a different problem. It spazzes out with some totally cryptic message:

[img:1f7fd700ec]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a324/azcn2503/badcopyagain.jpg[/img:1f7fd700ec]

So what's wrong with this message you ask yourself?

Consider the fact that I'm copying this file from one physical disk to another. [b:1f7fd700ec]Why is it trying to [i:1f7fd700ec]remove the folder[/i:1f7fd700ec] in a [i:1f7fd700ec]copy[/i:1f7fd700ec] procedure[/b:1f7fd700ec], as it states in the title of the error message? Also, note that [b:1f7fd700ec]it is a folder at first, but a filename or an extension by the time it's finished the error message[/b:1f7fd700ec]. That's quite a drastic change.

And what baffles me the most is... [b:1f7fd700ec]why let users create folder names so long when the server won't let you do anything with them?[/b:1f7fd700ec]

You know what that's like?

Letting users register to a website, and restricting their password to 50 characters. So they go ahead and use all 50 characters. Then when they try and log in using this password, it says: "Sorry! your password is too long! Try again using a different filename or extension!"

So again, I am feeling a bit irate. There is simply no way to successfully copy these files across without bumping in to stupid error messages.

As a result of these errors, I had no choice but to close the work order...

Don't worry, I'll add more when I get back to Windows. But right now, I'm having trouble in Linux. Maybe I should stop using computers?

Here's something else that annoys me slightly:

[img:f210494050]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a324/azcn2503/not_again.jpg[/img:f210494050]

If you want to make an operating system feel slow and clunky, force users to regularly restart after simple display setting changes.

Sure, I posted it in another topic, but here it is again - a good reminder that there is in fact nothing to look forward to in the next installment of Windows - Windows Vista.

An example of Windows' superior memory management:

Wrong, actually Vista does give you the chance to retry failed file and folder operations, something I found useful while copying Steam from my network backup to my vista PC while tripping and removing the network connection, oops.

You think it would use 2GB of RAM?!

No, but it does use 741MB of the hard drive as a paging/swap file, even though I told it not to use a single byte. I would rather it used the 2GB of RAM than use the HDD.

Bloody Windows. Anyway, more pictures coming soon. I think I should continue with the user interface inconsistency, such as aliased text where it should be anti-aliased, and over-use of the Microsoft Sans Serif font. Other things like connecting to a workgroup/domain, and adding a local user account while on a domain are also pretty weird, so I'll add them too. How about the Send To menu?

What else do I hate?

Windows stealing focus.

Scene: I'm just typing an email, typing an email, typing, typing... just typing an email... still typing, press the return key a few times, carry on typing.. bla de bla, type, type, type... I'm still typing an email. By the time I look up on the screen I've formatted my hard drive. How did this happen? Well, a window wanted my attention so it decided to bring it to the foreground and interrupt everyf*ckingthing that I'm doing.

Apparently, there is a PowerToy for Windows XP called 'Tweak UI' which is meant to stop windows from stealing focus, and make them flash a few times instead, if you prefer. It would be great if it worked.

Recently... I used one of work's old laptops. We are running a project to make sure all equipment is tagged up and placed in our asset management software.

The guy I work with said... "Oh.. I have an old company laptop. Do you want me to bring it in so you can tag it up?"

So he brings it in. It's a brick. It had a square screen, although it was in colour. It must've had a 3.5" HDD in.. it was old enough to have the manual contrast/brightness sliders on the side of the screen. It also had Windows 3.11 on it. It was something like an old 80486 or even an 80386 and it was an old IBM Thinkpad in case you're interested. Anyway we didn't bother tagging it up and adding it in to our software. We just enjoyed using it for a while.

It was fast, is all I can say!!

Windows XP, Windows Vista etc... they play about too much. You'd expect that a processor running at 2 billion commands every second would perform better than a processor running 100 million commands every second, right?

I have come to the conclusion that [b:b36eee5f64]everything beyond Windows 3.11 is bloatware!!!!!!!!!!![/b:b36eee5f64] (not including Windows 3.2 for the Chinese).

Interesting conclusion there. I once installed Win 3.11 on my p4, must more stable than xp on it. :D

Ouch.. try reinstalling SP2 or doing a non-destructive restore from the Win XP CD, that should fix explorer.exe.

Alternatively, disable Data Execution Prevention.
