I saw this on BBC news. I think it's just a cash-in on Second Life's success.

Yeah, they're trying to cash in on the MMO-that-doesn't-involve-fighting genre. It may work, but I believe second life is probably still better.

lol, my friend who has a ps3 was talking to me about this, saying how you could walk round and talk, my response was "o, cos you cant do that in real life". One nice feature is though its like an interactive menu, apparently you download movies from it and stuff. At first i thought when he was telling me, that you went to the movies, which seemed dumb since then people could stand up, walking in front of the screen, all the problems with real life. But if you can buy and download movies on it, this is the start of what people have dreamt since the beginning of the internet. A world in which you walk round to acquire your stuff. An avatar which can walk the whole web. This is what second life is planning to do, as the creator mentioned in the newspaper. He wants the avatars to leave second life. Imagine, walking round, different sections, you could be in a virtual music store, with all the sections. I myself have one problem. It would be cool dont get me wrong, but it would make it harder to surf the web. Because you have to know where everything is, people could see whos where, you couldnt travel from one place to a completely different place in a click, it would make life hard. They would have to make districts, but it would also bring the opportunity to set up an online highstreet, so you can browse, instead of having to know what you want. We could find the phrase, "going to town this weekend", being replaced by "going to web this weekend", although people would be able to go on when ever.

This brings me to another subject, recently, an adult MMO thing like second life, has introduced drugs, apparently they affect your avatar. This could lead to a lot of strange stuff. Maybe internet police, and internet jail, so you cant go online, except for in jail. A whole online government could be made, it would be a dictatorship ran by the programmers. In the real world, the strongest ruled, but it would all turn around online, the cleverest rule. Of course all this would probably be too hard to do. Mainly because it would involve a lot of places on the internet cooperating, and then others would be forced to join or be left behind. But it would make someone actually own the internet, or at least force co operation between sites. Maybe the next big story of second life is someone makes a shop selling actual items, that you can download, or has that been done. More people could set up shops, wouldnt cost too much either.

The concept is interesting, but as you say, flawed. Internet browsing is designed for convenience, and that would take away from it.

Second life is meant to be a fun social study, I believe. It has a large community and behaves similar to real world, nightclubs, drinking etc. People have even used it to make considerable money, selling virtual items for the virtual money, which can be exchanged for real money (and vice versa).

Someone creating a game like interface that behaves like shops, and ordinary internet retailers can buy shop space on it might be an interesting idea, and wouldn't rule the internet economy, but be a cleaver way of advertising.

People pay BIG bucks to have things like there home decorated, and I mean big, and the second life do sell homes, I think its free to join, but you can buy homes on it and stuff. So if they are going to have virtual shops, it probably be a good idea to buy a couple of houses, because people will want to "live" near the high street.

Another funny thing I read was that apparently terroists will start using games like second life, where you can get real money. This is because they will use it to make secretive transactions, pay in a load, send it to someone so they can take it out, lol, it wouldnt work, but the government is keeping an eye on it.

Hmm, yeah, would be interesting, though slightly pointless.

The problem with Second Life is that it runs pig slow, even if you have a quad core at 5GHz and 2 8800 Ultra's in SLi. Bad programming.
